Scarlett Johansson has recently made it clear that she is planning on having a music career. She has said these things through various sources including her own personal website, The Daily Record, and the National Enquirer.
Many are wondering if Scarlett will have any success in the music industry because of how successful other actors, such as Keanu Reeves with his band Dogstar, have been before. However, unlike most actor-musicians who only release an album or two of mediocre material then fade into obscurity, Scarlett insists that she will be committed to her debut album 100%.
“I love singing,” says Scarlett “And I am very serious about my music.”
There are many critics of Scarlett’s planned musical career but so far none have come forward to put a damper on her parade. “Of course I’m nervous,” she says, “nobody likes to be criticized but I am still passionate about my music and nothing is going to stop me from releasing my debut album.”
Scarlett Johansson has been singing since she was a young girl. She began taking voice lessons at the age of 9 then went on to join her first band, The Mohawks, at the age of 13. ‘The Yohawks’ were an all-girl teenage rock band who played shows at local talent contests and clubs in ScarJo’s hometown of New York City before breaking up three years later due to creative differences between members and other commitments.
“We were very young when we formed the group,” says ScarJo, “And I think that is why we broke up. We were all very different people. There was always tension between us.”
After The Yohawks split, Scarlett went on to join The Itch, an indie rock band led by Irwin Sparkes (lead guitar), Adam Glickman (rhythm guitar), and Matthew Ryder (bass). The group played at various clubs in New York City for about 6 months before dis-banding due again to creative differences.
“I guess it didn’t work out because of me,” said ScarJo who left the group shortly after joining due to her busy schedule. “I had a lot of other things going on at the time.”
Scarlett’s last musical foray was with her band Speechless. The group was led by Scarlett’s older brother, Hunter Johansson, his friend Henry Beckett and an old high school friend, Anthony Seck.
Speechless got their big break in early 2002 when they played at a party for the cast of TV hit Ally McBeal.
The band went on to play shows across New York City including various gigs at the Luna Lounge, Don Hill’s and Kenny’s Castaways before disbanding in late 2003 after releasing one EP entitled “Speechless” which received mixed reviews from critics due to its somewhat lighter sound than most indie rock bands. “We had fun while it lasted,” says ScarJo about Speechless.
Scarlett has begun working with music producer Ben H. Allen III who has worked with such musical greats as Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, and The Antidotes to name a few. Scarlett calls Ben her “musical soul mate” and says that he always knows how to help bring out the best in her music.
“Ben understands me as an artist,” she said. “He knows what I want to do and helps me accomplish it.”
So far Scarlett has recorded about 5 songs for her debut album including: “This Time”, “What Am I To You?”, “All That Matters (Is What You’ll Be)”, among others. She plans on writing more herself and may even try producing some of the tracks herself as well which would certainly be a first for any actress to accomplish musically.
Scarlett says she has yet to come up with a title for the album but is leaning towards calling it “A Horse With No Name”.
“It’s an old song actually,” she said, “but I think it will fit my music style pretty well.”
Critics are already predicting Scarlett Johansson’s inevitable downfall after her first album releases in late 2008/early 2009. It has even been suggested that this un-named album may actually be more of a career suicide attempt than a sincere career starter on ScarJo’s part. Only time will tell if Scarlett can pull this off or if she is destined to remain a Hollywood starlet and nothing more.
Why The Music Career Of Scarlett Johansson Never Took Off
Nobody ever said that Scarlett Johansson isn’t beautiful. Even her mother was a model. But pretty faces can only get one so far in the music business, even if you are blessed with talent as well. It is obvious to anyone who hears her sing that Scarlett really wanted to be a singer/songwriter, but right now she’s stuck where almost every other big-time celebrity goes when they want to take up a hobby for kicks: waiting tables.
The difference between them and Scarlett is that she isn’t doing it at some joint on Melrose that caters to the rich and famous; she’s waiting tables at Manhattan’s Pheasant restaurant where she waits on members of New York City society all day long.
“Today wasn’t so bad,” Scarlett said after a long day of balancing trays and taking orders from people who have more money than God. “I actually had to take out the garbage, but it was nice because this really helpful guy named Derek carried all of the bags for me.”
Listening to tales like these is heartbreaking for some of her longtime fans. Even though she’s landed on her feet as far as jobs go, some say that it’s just not fair for Scarlett Johansson to be waiting tables when she should be selling millions of records and touring the world with Coldplay or Katy Perry.
“She has everything going against her,” says fanboy Steve McQueen (no relation). “Her face is THE most recognizable in the world and she has a nice voice, but her last album sold like ten copies and it’s been almost 5 years since she’s put anything out. Also, we’ve got Justin Bieber now, so what chance does some nobody who works at Soul Cycle have?”
“It makes me sad,” says Smaug the Dragon from his lair deep inside of Erebor. “I know that I am not human and don’t get to get behind such petty concepts as fame or money, but I just hate seeing someone with this much talent wasting their time doing something that doesn’t elevate them personally or professionally.”
Even Scarlett’s manager agrees: “If you think about it, Scarlett Johansson is one of the best things ever to happen to the music business, but she is also one of the worst. Everyone wants to hear her sing, but nobody wants to buy her album, which means that I am STILL waiting for my first paycheck from her.”
Reason for failure of Music Career Of Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is one of the most beautiful and sexiest women in Hollywood who won the hearts of droves of people with her acting skills, especially after showing her bikini body. She appears as a major role in almost all super hit films. But many are not aware that Scarlett Johansson has also tried her luck in the music industry but was unsuccessful to make it big there. However, there were some reasons for this failure which will be discussed here.
Scarlett first made news for launching a music career back in 2004 when she joined The Singles as a band member. Many sources suggested at that time that the actress had taken this decision after being inspired by CDs CDs given by Sean Penn to their daughter. She got training from Canadian rocker Bryan Adams who used to work with her band.
The group finally brought out an album titled ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’ in May 2008. It was considered that Scarlett could also sing for this album which featured Tom Waits, David Bowie, and Bono.
Critics gave mixed reviews for the music of The Singles with some saying that it was just average while others said that it had both highs and lows. However, one thing which most of them agreed on was that Scarlett’s part in this album was very limited and she sang any song there.
They wrote that she is extremely talented but lacks the experience and expertise to make a mark in this field. She still needs years of practice before becoming really good here.
Scarlett Johansson tried her hands in another music album titled ‘Break Up’ which was released in September 2009. This time she worked with Tony award winner, singer, and songwriter Pete Yorn. Only one song from this album could make it big at that time ie Lost Weekend.
Most of the songs from Break Up were written by Pete and Scarlett has just sung them. S he gave a glimpse of her vocal skills but people remained unimpressed and failed to give any positive response for this album too.
Scarlett Johansson continued with her acting career without giving much attention to her music career except for releasing a couple of singles here and there. One such single was ‘Falling Down’ which was launched in April 2012. It unnoticed probably because many were expecting that she would release it as a part of The Singles band.
This talented actress left everyone spellbound by playing marvelous roles in movies like The Horse Whisperer, Lost in Translation, Girl With A Pearl Earring, etc. But this beauty’s luck could not support her much as far as music is concerned. After releasing two studio albums – Break Up (with Pete Yorn) and Anywhere I Lay My Head (in the year 2008) – she could not gain any commercial success.
As per sources, Scarlett was too haughty about her singing talent that she never bothered to make an effort for improvement. She believed that people would naturally like her voice if given a chance but things did not turn out as expected after both her studio albums failed miserably through the critics applauded her work.
It seems that Scarlett will continue with only acting and not go into the music field in the future too.
Scarlett Johansson failed to make her place in the hearts of people through her music career but she is still one of the sexiest and beautiful women alive. Hope she will continue to give us hit after hit movies forever and ever and remain at the top always!
