5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade/NES, 1989)
What do you get when you take over the city with your ninja skills? Well, that’s exactly what the turtles are doing in this game! As one of four personalities (Leo, Raph, Donny, and Mikey), it’s each player’s job to use their own special abilities during combat.
Careful though, because once Krang drains your health bar he’ll turn into a giant robot for an extra bit of punishment before sending you back to New York City. If anything else happens on the way home.
4. Double Dragon II: The Revenge (Arcade/NES/SMS/Genesis, 1989)
The sequel to the infamous Double Dragon, this game upped the ante in just about every way. The moves are easier to pull off with 2 players involved, enemies are tougher with more moves at their disposal too. Expect total mayhem when you have both worlds collide! Just be sure not to neglect your friends… or yourself for that matter.
3. Altered Beast (Arcade/Genesis, 1989)
I doubt anyone is expecting an accurate representation of Greek mythology in this one. However, what they did get seems close enough considering the circumstances! Controlling a werewolf dude who is basically on a rampage against various mythological creatures across time itself makes for some top-notch action set pieces all around. Even after beating the game, there’s still some fun to be had, since you get to turn into a T-Rex and a dragon for bonus rounds!
2. Golden Axe (Arcade/Genesis 1989)
The same company responsible for Altered Beast also made this one. While the gameplay is quite similar in some ways, it’s also very different with many things going on at once during some of the more intense battle sequences. Letting loose decapitating attacks while kicking some butt makes Golden Axe definitely a stand-out title from its time period.

This game really takes you out of your comfort zone in a good way! With so much going on in terms of gameplay, it’s easy to get caught up in how adventurous things can actually be when the world has both humans and monsters residing in it.
